Make sure to read our blog, Understanding Wildlife Exemptions in Texas. If you’re a landowner in Texas, you may be interested in the wildlife exemption program. This program allows landowners to receive a property tax exemption for managing their land for wildlife habitat. However, there are certain qualifications and requirements that must be met to maintain exemption status. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about wildlife exemptions in Texas.
What is the Texas Agriculture Exemption?
- The Texas Agricultural Exemption is a tax exemption given to Texas landowners. It is used to motivate people to utilize their land for agriculture and wildlife. It can knock thousands off your annual property taxes each year.
What are the Texas Ag Exemption requirements?
- The Texas Ag Exemption requirements can be found at https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/land/private/agricultural_land. One of the requirements is that the land has been primarily used for agriculture for at least five of the past seven years. This applies to the land only, not the landowner. If you’ve recently bought a property, you may not have to wait five years; you can potentially piggyback off of the previous owners land use. In most counties, you need at least 10 acres to qualify.
What is the Texas Wildlife Management Exemption?
- The Texas Wildlife Management Exemption is the add-on to the Texas Ag Exemption. You cannot get a wildlife management exemption without an ag exemption first. To get a wildlife tax exemption, you must first get an ag exemption. You can transfer your ag exemption to wildlife, but you must have a wildlife habitat management plan – which includes yearly land improvements and submitting it each year to the State.
Where can you find a Texas Wildlife Exemption form?
- This form is called a 1-D-1 form and you can get it from your local tax appraisal office. It must be filed between January 1st and May 1st of any given year.
